REASONS TO LEARN

Music is a science.

Music is exact, specific, and it demands precise acoustics. A conductor's score is a chart, a graph that indicates frequencies, intensities, volume changes, melody, and harmony all at once and with an exact control of time.

Music is mathematical.

Music is rhythmically based on the subdivisions of time into fractions. This division must be done instantly, not worked out on paper.

Music uses foreign language.

Most of the terms in music are from Italian, German, or French, and the notation is certainly not English, but a highly developed kind of shorthand that uses symbols to represent ideas. The semantics of music is a complete and universal language.

Music is historical.

Music usually reflects the environment and time of its creation.

Music is physical education.

Music requires coordination of many parts of the body, which complements skills learned in sports, in addition to extraordinary control of breathing, which responds instantly to the sound the mind interprets.

Music is all these things, but most of all, music is art.

Music allows a human being to take all these dry techniques and use them to express emotion, one of the cornerstones of mental health. This is one thing science cannot duplicate.

CONVENIENCE

There is no need to fight Boston traffic for music lessons. Hire a patient, qualified teacher to come to you. However if you prefer, lessons at a reduced rate are available at my home studio in Davis Sqare (a three-minute walk from the T-stop).

Kids learn in school for most of the time and often have extracurricular activities in odd places. Use your home as the natural learning environment that it is, and hire a patient teacher with a system that works.

Ten years of experience teaching students, ranging in age from 5 to 67, has helped develop the methods used with clarinet, flute, and saxophone lessons, as well as music theory tutoring.

Musical expression requires emotional expression and a desire to practice. For this reason, my lessons are geared toward discovering how to be expressive while having fun.
